I carved this hippo while studying Alebrijes under a local craftsman. I started with a log, and using a machete, chisel, and knife, slowly brought this hippo to life. From the start, this piece was anything but traditional. I enjoyed learning skills and techniques from Mexican Folk art, but always tried to bring something personal to it. They never carve hippo Alebrijes in Mexico, and my paint job was a clear departure from the garish standard. I keep this piece with me to remind myself the value of constantly learning new skills, and employing them in a unique & personal way.
